The Summary of our survey
The homesickness is one of the problems that international students have to struggle when they study abroad. We realized it's a critical issue and we tried to figure out the root cause of the problem. Recently, we created a survey with 10 questions to ask 10 international students in Swinburne University particular EAP4A students, who came from 5 countries as Vietnam, Cambodia, China, Korea, and Japan, about their homesickness. We interviewed face to face with every individual student and received lots of interesting data as well as suggestions.
Firstly, we asked the respondents personal information about ages, gender, and nationality. After that, we interviewed how they felt the homesickness and what things they missed the most. As a result, the majority of them felt homesick, 50% of participants missed their family the most, 30% of them missed their traditional foods and the less percentage missed their friends with 20%. Therefore, half of the respondents chose to contact their family and friends when they felt homesickness, the other respondents usually played games, read letters, watched videos and slept to overcome the issue. According to the Journal Article of Saravanan, C, Mohamad, M & Alias, A (P82,2019), students have used social networks to connect with their family and friends to deal with homesickness. This solution enhances their self-confidence and reduces their homesickness as they have been receiving lots of emotional support as well as suggestions to overcome their problems. Surely, this solution is very helpful for students who struggle with the homesick problem and also help their relationship with family get better.
However , form this survey most our responders are agree that is no place like home even the place are much better then the place they are grow up .As a human beings I think we all agreement with familiarity are every importance to us . The most important is when student feel homesickness they always can found someone to help and they should find someone to help or by doing somethings to solve this problem .According to Saravanan, C(P.108-116,2017) the homesickness considered a common situation in international student and it affect to human mental health especially at first six months.
In conclusion, we found that everyone are form different counties, they all do not have family around them . In this condition ,they can use some tool to connect their family or fiends. Form this we got many ideas from those participants to solve homesickness problem such as put attention to somewhere else .We also found that has some person they do not feel about homesickness, which is good .That is really good for someone who have far away from home.
